Fun Fact About Washington, DC
The original 100-square-mile plot of land that was to be the nation's capital was named the District of Columbia by the commission with the responsibility of creating the seat of the U.S. government. The area included the ciities of Georgetown and Alexandria, VA. However, Congress made numerous changes over the years. For example, in 1846, the federal government returned 32 square miles, including Alexandria and what is now Arlington Country, to Virginia. Georgetown was a separate city on and off for decades. It did not permanently become part of Washignton until 1895. The County of Washington, which was Maryland's contribution to the nation's capital, technically still retains its name.
